Common Valve Applications in Municipal Water and Wastewater and How FTS Approaches Them
A water system is valves from the intake to the outfall, and the pattern across all of them is the same: the valve body almost never fails. The interfaces do. Packing, seats, pilots, floats, and actuators are where a plant's money goes, and getting those right is a matter of application knowledge, not catalog thickness.

Municipal work runs on the AWWA standards. Resilient-seated gate valves under C509 and C515 own the buried distribution grid at 12 inches and smaller, and rubber-seated butterfly valves under C504 take over from there, up through 72 inches. The famous problem in this population is not mechanical. It is that buried valves that were never exercised turn out to be seized exactly when a main breaks, which is why utilities run valve exercising programs and why fast availability of an exact-match replacement matters more than any brochure spec.
Aeration air control: the hardest loop in the plant
Aeration is typically around half of a wastewater plant's power bill, and its control loop is the most demanding valve application on the site. A dissolved oxygen probe in the basin sets an airflow target, and a modulating butterfly valve on each zone's air drop has to hold that flow, continuously, around the clock. The catch is physics: a butterfly valve does most of its controlling between roughly 20 and 60 percent open. Below that band almost nothing moves, and above it the valve is effectively wide open, so an oversized valve controls like a light switch. Plants end up with valves that can only find 25 or 50 percent, hunting loops that wear out actuators, and blowers throttled against a pressure they do not need.
The actuators in this service are electric and modulating, and the incumbent names are Beck, Rotork, and AUMA, all premium hardware. Modern control practice, called most-open-valve logic, deliberately rides one valve nearly wide open so the blowers can run at the lowest possible header pressure while the other valves trim the split.
We size the valve to the control band, not to the pipe, and we build the whole package: butterfly or V-port ball, electric or pneumatic actuation, smart positioner, calibrated on our bench before it ships. On the actuator side we offer ProMation electrics as the cost-competitive alternative to the premium names, in on-off or 4-20mA, NEMA 4X or explosion-proof, with battery-backup fail-safe. And when the installed actuator is the problem, we have rebuilt AUMA electric actuators in our own shop, boards, bearings, and all.

Sludge, grit, and solids
Downstream of the headworks the media fights back. Rags, grease, and grit plug and abrade everything, which is why sludge service belongs to two valve families: eccentric plug valves, whose plug cams out of the flow path, and knife gate valves, whose sharpened gate shears straight through fibrous solids. Knife gates win in thickened sludge, grit slurry, and tight face-to-face spaces, and they come with a known cost: the gate drags media through the packing on every stroke, so packing and seat kits are a standing consumable in any plant that runs them.
Knife gates are our largest single product family. We supply Orbinox resilient and metal-seated knife gates from 2 through 48 inches, shipped with the cylinder, solenoid, and position switches already mounted and tested, and we stock the packing sets, seats, and cylinder repair kits that keep them alive. On the biggest end of the scale, we supplied the 48 inch knife gates on a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers weir project in the Savannah District, and six years later we were the shop on site rebuilding those valves and their electric actuators.
Pump stations: check valves and air valves
Every pump discharge carries a check valve, and the recurring complaint is slam: the disc still open when the column reverses, then a pressure spike through the station that the neighbors can hear. The fixes run from lever-and-weight swing checks to rubber-flapper designs to spring-loaded silent checks on clean water. On sewage force mains, the air release valves at the high points are the most neglected valves a utility owns, because grease fouls the float mechanism and nobody volunteers to service them. They are a permanent replacement stream.
We supply swing, dual-disc, silent, and tilting-disc checks and we ask about the media before recommending one, because a spring-loaded silent check in raw sewage is a service call waiting to happen. A municipal water treatment OEM buys stainless tilting-disc check valves from us order after order.
Chemical feed
The chemical room is small-bore and unforgiving. Sodium hypochlorite off-gasses continuously and will pressure-lock a standard ball valve, which is why hypo service calls for vented-ball thermoplastic valves with PTFE seats and FKM seals. Alum, ferric, and polymer each punish the wrong elastomer choice. No AWWA standard governs these little valves, so plants lean on whoever actually knows the chemistry.
We ask what the chemical is, at what concentration, before anything gets quoted. Seat and seal selection is the whole job here, and matching materials to media is the thing our desk does all day.
The buying reality
Engineers write the spec, contractors buy the capital valves, and the plant buys everything else, year after year, through distributors. Two realities shape those purchases now. Most municipal fiscal years close June 30, so maintenance money moves in the spring. And on projects with federal SRF money, Build America Buy America rules require domestic iron and steel, so the submittal needs the paperwork, not just the valve. We buy direct from most valve manufacturers in the country, we ship assemblies mounted and tested as one part number, we can document Buy America compliance on qualifying lines, and we try to turn every quote in 24 hours.
