Common Valve Applications in Pulp and Paper and How FTS Approaches Them
The paper industry invented half of the valve world's hardest problems. Fibrous stock that mats and jams, liquors that scale everything they touch, bleach chemistry that eats stainless steel, and rejects that destroy a standard valve in days. The Southeast is the center of American pulp and paper, and it is our home turf.

Stock: the consistency ladder
Pulp stock is water and fiber, and the percentage of fiber, the consistency, dictates the valve. Below about 2 percent, whitewater and thin stock behave nearly like water, and resilient-seated valves give bubble-tight shutoff. From 2 to 6 percent, the fiber mats and dewaters wherever the flow path has a cavity, and the standard answer is a metal-seated knife gate whose sharpened gate shears the mat while the full-bore body gives fiber nowhere to pack. Above 6 percent, high-density stock will not even flow around an ordinary closing member, and O-port gate designs that remove a cross-section of the stock to seat take over. Get the consistency wrong and the valve either leaks, jams, or drives its actuator torque through the roof.
Knife gates are our largest single product family, and Orbinox, our flagship line, builds the whole ladder: resilient and metal-seated, wafer and lug, heavy-duty MSS SP-81 patterns, through-conduit and round-port designs, from 2 through 48 inches, shipped with cylinder, solenoid, and position switches mounted and tested. And because mills standardize on incumbent brands, we cross-reference: a Southeast paper mill runs our Orbinox gates supplied as direct equivalents to the fabricated knife gates it originally installed, matched on face-to-face and drilling.

The recovery cycle: chemistry that fights back
A kraft mill's liquor loop is the most severe chemical service in the building. Weak black liquor leaves washing at about 15 percent solids and gets evaporated to 65 to 80 percent for the recovery boiler, growing stickier, more scaling, and more caustic at every stage, which is why the control valves in this loop run rugged metal seats that scrape themselves clean and step up to duplex stainless at the top of the train. Green liquor, the dissolved smelt, is by common consent the worst scaling service in the mill, where full-port ball valves that wipe the ball clean through rotation and O-port gates survive and cavity-style valves seize. White liquor is hot caustic, back to the digesters in 316 stainless.
We are honest about where we play in this loop. The engineered severe-service control valves at its heart are specified territory, and the mills know their incumbents. Where FTS wins is everything around that core: knife gate isolation on stock and liquor-adjacent lines, O-port class applications, the steam and condensate systems, and above all the wear stream, packing sets, seats, gates, and cylinder repair kits that every one of these valves consumes on a schedule.
Recycled fiber: the valve-abusive zone
OCC and recycled-fiber plants are the hardest duty in the industry. The pulper's ragger pulls out wire and plastic, the junk trap catches the heavy rejects, and high-density cleaners spin out sand, staples, and broken glass. Standard stainless valves in the worst of this service can be compromised in days. The answers are purpose-built: metal-cutting knife gates that shear through trash, round-port and through-conduit designs on cleaner bottoms and junk traps, hardened gates and seats, and oversized cylinders with the force to cut what lands in the seat.

Orbinox builds the severe-service configurations this zone demands, including round-port and through-conduit valves for cleaner and junk-trap duty, and we supply them automated, with the cylinder repair kits and replacement gates behind them. When a cleaner-bottom valve is eating itself every few months, the fix is usually the right configuration, not a tougher copy of the wrong one.
Steam, air, and the instrument layer
The dryer section runs on pressure-staged steam groups, with condensate pulled from every rotating can and cascaded between headers, so the machine room carries a dense population of steam control valves, wedge gates on headers, condensate level valves, and the pneumatic layer that positions all of it. That layer is a purchase stream of its own: volume boosters that speed up big actuators, precision regulators, positioners, and the retrofits that keep decades-old control valves in closed loop.
This stream already runs through us. A Southeast paper operation reorders Fairchild volume boosters from us as a standing item, a tissue maker buys our Fairchild precision regulators and positioner packages, and we have supplied Teflon-lined butterfly assemblies, automated and bench-tested, drop-shipped to mills as far away as Wisconsin. Positioner retrofits on installed actuators, regardless of brand, are a specialty of ours.
Fewer mills, running harder
The industry is consolidating around the Southeast. Georgia leads the country in softwood pulpwood, the region leads in active mill capital projects, and the closures in graphic paper are being answered by conversions to containerboard and tissue. The result is fewer, bigger mills running closer to their limits, where reliability spending concentrates and the outage calendar rules the year. A three-day mill outage can open dozens of line valves, safety valves, and control valves for inspection at once, and the parts had better be on site when the wrench turns. We buy direct from most valve manufacturers in the country, we ship assemblies mounted and tested as one part number, we stock the wear stream, and we try to turn every quote in 24 hours. Put us on the pre-outage bill of materials and judge us on the response.
